All About Non 12 Step Rehab Centers

Sobriety is the word that has been used more commonly when discussing recovery from any drug addiction. Therefore, when a person with an addiction problem approaches a drug rehabilitation center, their main goal is to achieve complete abstinence from drug abuse. Hence what they want is to have a strong rehabilitation program that would help them to achieve long-term sobriety.  With advances in our understanding of the underlying biology of addictions; now, it has opened the door of non 12 step rehab centers, allowing the development of techniques and approaches specially meant for the drug addicts to maintain sobriety from drugs and alcohol.
Non 12 step rehab centers - system of global mutual aid groups, basically where one addict helps the other in order to achieve sobriety and to sustain ongoing recovery. This kind of recovery program is purely based on the personal opinions of the patients; they even can attend the meetings to share their views and opinions. In fact, these kinds of treatment centers (Non 12 step rehab centers) do not operate based on the program methods of alcoholics anonymous.

The steps involved in this complimentary therapy program include:

·      Cognitive behavioral therapy
·      Abstinence-based counseling
·      Supportive therapy narrative
·      Motivational effectiveness
·      Couples and family therapy
·      Patient education and pharmacotherapy

All the patients will experience a sense of gratification at their particular stage of recovery. Every patient is needed to be properly evaluated and a psycho-social assessment should be done. However, to properly evaluate, specialists are available who can coordinate, review the progress and make further ongoing treatment decisions of the patients. Furthermore, all additional problems are to be addressed by the concerned specialists say, for example, liver disease by a liver specialist, psycho-social and interpersonal issues by a psychologist and mental issues by a psychiatrist.

These therapies are vital that these will help patients to discover underlying and often unconscious, self destructive beliefs about themselves, others and the world. Once they start accepting these beliefs, patients will able to increasingly accept themselves and others without any emotional distress.  This will ultimately result in reduction of their emotional distress as well as their overall stress and anxiety. Therefore, definitely these therapies will help them to improve their mood and to gain control over self-destructive behaviors such as addiction.

The significance of this rehabilitation program is that it neither requires nor recommends compliance either to any particular model or any other method of treatment.  It is completely based on appropriate therapies that match according to the patient’s needs.  In short, it helps patients to identify and describe the various stages of recovery that will lead them to become more realistic in their personal aims.

Malibu Horizon - What is a Non 12 Step Drug Rehab Center?

First, what are the 12 Steps?
For almost 75 years the 12 steps  have been used to help thousands of individuals struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction.  This philosophy is still being used all over the country by residential drug treatment programs as well as hundreds of local AA and NA groups.  While this program has proved to be successful for a lot of struggling individuals, it is not without its flaws.  Because drug addiction and alcohol dependence are such a serious and complicated diseases, a 12 step program that may work for someone, may not necessarily work for another.  Actually, the majority of statistics show that the entire 12 step treatment approach is extremely ineffective in treating long term drug and alcohol addiction and doesn’t provide individuals with the tools they need to remain sober over the long term.

Limitations of a 12 Step Program
While 12 step programs and meetings are great places to find support and guidance when struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction, most studies find these programs to be largely unsuccessful.  These studies show that fewer than 10% of people who attend 12 step programs actually achieve sobriety over the long term.  One of the mains reasons for this is the large emphasis the program puts on the group dynamic, instead of the individual.  When drug rehabilitation is done solely through a group setting, it give each individual the necessary time and therapies to really get down to the underlying reasons behind their addictions.  Because group sessions tend to spread the focus around to the overall betterment of the group, and not necessarily the individual, they often lack the necessary depth to truly get to the root of the problem.

Non 12 Step Drug Rehab Treatment Centers
Non 12 Step drug alcohol treatment centers and recovery programs are basically any kind of treatment center that does not revolve their entire treatment philosophy around the 12 step model.  Now this isn’t to say that they might not incorporate some of the 12 step philosophy into their treatment, but instead will focus on a wider range of treatment methods.  Successful non 12 step treatment centers effectively know how to use different treatment models and motivational techniques that fit the current needs and personality of their patients.  Secondly, successful non 12 step based treatment centers will work closely with patients to help them identify and address the personal meaning behind their addiction, and any psychological or emotional triggers that may be leading to their substance abuse.

This type of wide-ranging and holistic treatment method helps patients to come to terms with their emotions and their addictions, instead of bottling it up and exploring it down the road.  This self-empowering approach, mixed with specialized individual treatment is the hallmark of any good Non 12 Step Treatment center.

Malibu Horizon What are Non 12 Step Drug Rehab Centers?

When you or someone you know is planning to go to rehab, you need lots of good information. Most people don’t know much about drug addiction and alcoholism. You hear about celebrities and athletes who battle with drugs and alcohol but that doesn’t tell you very much.

Drug and alcohol abuse is a disease. Like any other disease it has to be treated properly, and as early as possible.

There are 2 different types of philosophies in the drug rehab treatment world. The first ones are those drug rehabs that build their programs around the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The second type does not.

There are good arguments for both. However, very few offer both. Offering both a 12 step  approach and a non 12 step rehab recovery program approach to drug treatment seems to make the most sense.  The 12 step rehab approach is based on a very successful method for staying clean and or sober. However, it does not work for everyone. There are those who have tried it and been unsuccessful. Also, the 12 steps are a faith based approach, which does not appeal to some people.
So, before deciding which treatment center is the right one, take a good hard look around and make sure the program offers an alternative the 12 steps.

When is Inpatient Drug Rehab Necessary?

First, let’s define terms. The term “inpatient drug rehab” refers to any facility which offers drug alcohol rehab treatment, and their clients are required to stay there 24/7.

The question being asked here is when is attending a full-time program the right decision? To answer it, some background information would be needed. There are several different “levels” of drug alcohol treatment, of which an inpatient treatment center type program is just one.

Others include outpatient (IOP) and partial hospitalization (PHP). Detox is considered to be an inpatient level of care. Detox is also the only level of care where there may be certain restrictions on leaving the facility against medical advice (AMA).

In general, once someone has been diagnosed with alcohol and or drug problem, the consensus is they first need detox and then attend IOP. Some insurance companies require that a client attend IOP first before approving inpatient care.

Insurance notwithstanding and everything else being equal, inpatient drug rehab in an inpatient treatment center should only be considered after someone has failed after completing IOP. Certain accepts to this “rule of thumb” would be if the person has expressed suicidal ideation. Another exception would be when the person is using drugs intravenously.

News Flash: Alcoholism is a Disease, Not a Character Weakness

Alcoholism is a Disease, Not a Weakness

When people hear someone has a drinking problem, or they see them drunk and or disorderly, too often those onlookers pass harsh judgment on the alcoholic. The natural human reaction can be one of scorn. Some people have a tendency to assume the alcoholic has a weak character or lacks moral fiber. The presumptive reaction is to stand in critical judgment, thinking the person should just stop drinking and get on with their lives.

Alcoholism is a Disease

The truth is an alcoholic has a disease. Alcoholism Is an incurable, progressive, fatal disease. Don’t just take my word for it. This is the position of both the American Medical Association (AMA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Like other Diseases, Alcoholism can be Treated Successfully

Like diabetes and other serious medical conditions, alcoholism can be treated successfully. It can be put and kept in remission. It can be managed so the alcoholic can live a relatively normal existence. Today, thanks to modern medical discoveries, there are a variety of FDA pharmaceutical medicines which can help relieve the cravings and help the alcoholic to not drink.

More about Alcoholism Treatment

Believe it or not, there are only a few modern alcoholism treatment centers out there who are fully utilizing all of the medicines that are available for treating alcoholism. The majority opinion still exists that these FDA approved medicines are not a good idea. Remember, this is “cancer” we’re dealing with here, literally a life or death proposition. I have seen too many people die from this disease to accept any arguments that try to justify not using any and every legitimate tool against it.
